This is one of my favorite museums and worth membership even though it is 100 miles from San Diego. The overall collection is fantastic as well as the small adjoining restaurant with holistic, latin flavors.
I look forward to viewing the new exhibit Lines and Colors.

This retrospective exhibition of Argentinian/Spanish artist Esteban Lisa marks the first time his abstract works have been shown in a museum in the United States. It is rare to "rediscover" an important modernist artist, particularly one whose work is as fully realized through five decades of painting. Although small, his works are subtly beautiful, from the restrained gradations of abstract form and color of the 1930s paintings, to the surprisingly vivid explosions of color marks across the pages from the 1950s to 1970s. Little is known about the artist's life or development as Lisa largely matured in isolation. He never exhibited his work during his lifetime since he was surrounded by Argentinian artists and collectors with a preference for figurative work. Instead, through extensive reading and studing, Lisa explored the ideas and theories of abstraction, mysticism and cosmology that were being investigated by contemporary European artists. It is clear from his work, his teachings and his writing, that Lisa was among the avant-garde modernist artists who saw abstraction as a sign of impending global change. This exhibition is organized by the Museum of Latin American Art in association with the Fundación Esteban Lisa in Buenos Aires and is curated by Barbara Bloemink and Jorge Virgili.

First of all, we in the artworld of San Diego must say goodbye to yet another innovater, artist and friend. Dennis Paul Batt passed away unexpectedly about a day ago. His ideas inspired us and his intense discussions got us to think in new ways. Good bye, Dennis.

The Guardians of Time were arrested by police at the St. Mark’s Square in Venice and taken into custody. Has anyone observed, photographed or filmed the seizure of the four life-sized red sculptures “Guard Time” on Wednesday afternoon August 31st, 2011?
We ask your assistance by sending photos of of the arrest.
The red giant sculptures were carried by four policemen to the nearby police station on Piazza San Marco.
Time Guards “Madonna” light sculptures are made by the artist Manfred Kielnhofer. Please send your photos to info @ lightart-biennale.com.

Another class in Oil Pastel Mixed Media; Homage to O'keeffe will be taught on February 6th at the San Diego Art Department in North Park. Class starts at 11 AM for four hours. All the supplies are included in the price of $45. It includes many and most of the techniques you can use to draw and paint in this versatile media.

Specimen at Scanga's Studio

On September 18th and 19th Specimen will be "popping up" at Italo Scanga's old studio in Bay Park at 4130 Napier Street, right off Morena Boulevard. This temporary store will be open to the public on Saturday the 18th from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and on Sunday the 19th from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. In addition to the Specimen objects, a selection of Scanga's personal collection of vintage items will be sold.

The late Italo Scanga was an internationally recognized artist and taught at UCSD for over twenty years. Italo amassed large amounts of found objects, both unique and run of the mill, that he incorporated into his assemblage artwork. Many of these objects have been in storage since Scanga's death nine years ago. The sale will include bird houses, masks, bones, studio furniture, religious sculpture, frames, vases and many art books. There are some very unusual, quirky artifacts here and it will be well worth a look.

This four hour workshop really "pushes the envelope" with what you can do with oil pastel and its friends. First we will make an oil pastel "mixed media sampler" of 15 different combinations using oil pastel with ink, watercolor, soft pastel, acrylic, collage, colored pencil, rubberstamps and charcoal. See what glorious effects you can get! Then use those effects to make an artwork based on a masterwork by Georgia O'Keefe. . All materials included.

This came to me the other day and I thought it worth sharing with my students.
"Letter to the Student of Painting"

"Your day contains a great measure of freedom. Your responsibility as a painter is here within the walls of the studio and in the setting of the landscape. You have the opportunity to exercise genuine mastery at every step, and it is in this spirit of grand possibility that I hope you will reflect on the advice made plain here.

Do not grieve too long for the troubles of the outside world. There is important work to be done here. We can best express our care for all others by attending to our work well.

Allow yourself the peace of purpose and the knowledge that to make another attempt with the brush is a noble thing. If you accept the discipline of the truest principles of art, then yours is the reward of an unbroken line of tradition.

Therefore, you may earnestly free your mind of all heartaches, sadness, and transitory despairs. Creation is above these things.

Your vocation is as real and as true as any other. Those who denounce the artist as idle manifest a deep ignorance of the nature of art. Have faith that the civilized will somewhere, at some time, value your well-wrought works. It is a miracle that the world keeps its havens for art and yet it does. Know that to create art is to do a necessary piece of work. The most noble pleasures and measureless joys result from such endeavors. True art is undeniable and it is a gift for all humanity.

The threefold responsibility of the artist is: to creation, to individual talent, and to humanity. For creation - the whole of nature - we must cultivate prayerful awe. This is our source of work and our refuge as well. We should seek harmony with nature. For the individual talent - long hours and years of steady industry hope to find our abilities fulfilled, our minds, hearts, and hands put to valuable service. In this way, we maintain the sanctity of art. Lastly, we make to humanity a willing gift of all we do. Our control over the material world lasts only a lingering moment and it takes a generous soul to build the ambition of a lifetime and then to hand it over in trust to the future.

Painting requires the bravery of solitude. Painting requires disciplined labor. To be a painter is to search the world with a benevolent eye for every subtle beauty that the infinite world offers.

Here is the opportunity to give your honest effort and to add in any small way to the legacy of art. Cultivate patience in your heart and you will improve. Learn to see well and your hand will become sure.

No pain or doubt can invade the honest soul engaged in the communion of creation. We artists must love the world with our deepest selves and forgive it at every turn.

To paint even a little passage with a measure of quality is to achieve a life's triumph.

Spend your days wisely with the best thoughts and works of those who have walked the road before you. Search their paths, their timeless inspirations, and the lineage of their genius. Learn your craft well and your talent will mature into its full possibility. Keep an obedient heart before nature. She is the master above all other masters. Nature is the concrete manifestation of all that remains true and sublime. Let us always be thankful for her abundance and hopeful that we might approach her in our art. NEA Chairman comes to San Diego

It's into day's news. Rocco Landesman, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts has come to town to tour all many of our art projects. That means the "big guys" such as The Old Globe Theater and the "small guys" such as Moxie theater and artists working in their studios have been noticed. The plan is to enhance our arts profile with the Federal endowment. Good words were said. The Obama administration has said that all cabinet positions must interlace with the NEA. That means the Department of Transportation, for example, is now thinking about quality of transportation as well as the conditions of highways. Quality can mean art murals on structures, etc. Hooray! It's good to be noticed. San Diego communities have a lot going on in culture and the arts.

CLASSICAL OIL PAINTING: SECRETS OF OLD MASTERS' TECHNIQUE.

"When a transparent color covers another, it also changes it. As a result there is a mixed color which differs from original simple color. You can see it watching smoke come out from the fireplace. When we watch smoke against the background of the black fireplace it seems to be blue, but the same smoke against the background of blue air it seems gray or reddish. In the same way the purple color under which we put Prussian Blue becomes violet. And Prussian Blue will become Green if underneath lays Yellow. If we put light on dark it becomes blue and more beautiful, and more wonderful will become light and dark."

First of all, I must apologize for neglecting my writing to you and I must wish all and everyone a "Merry Christmas!"

I am looking forward to my next "batch" of classes beginning January 4th. This will be a painting class at the San Diego Art Department. Here are some painting tips from Robert Genn:

"I consider all art questions valid. I'm trying to make a full painting."
* The painting needs a foreground, middle ground and background.
* It needs a strong black, white and grayscale design.
* It needs gradations, large and small and interlocking patterns.
* It needs attention to counterpoint and negative areas.
* It needs a sense of mystery, fantasy, illusion or wonder.
* It needs fresh slashes, swipes and textures.
* It needs not to be overworked, laboured or boring.
* It needs colour sophistication--perhaps light and shade.
* It needs at least some elements to be formed up properly.
* It needs one area to determine what another area will be.
* It needs to reflect the joy or meaning of an occasion, whether in the present or past.

"You need to take a guilt-free nap any time you need one.

As creativity and workmanship diminish with tiredness, you need think about coming to a full stop when you're overtired.

One of the greatest of all ploys is to simply leave something undone when you turn out the studio lights. This undone part may be a problematical area, or it may be one of those pleasurable passages where you know exactly what to do next. This alone primes the pump and propels the passion. Simple desire may be the key to early rising."

“I'm laptopping you from the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC. Right now there's a terrific retrospective here called "Sargent and the Sea." It's loaded with fresh watercolours and oils, including beach scenes with children and nudes, derelict boats, and frightening storms from some of his ocean crossings. Sargent was an obsessive sketcher, and the show is enriched with 80 drawings and scrapbook sketches.

John Singer Sargent (1856-1925), while often batted about by current trends and the expectations of his fans, was also a self-motivated individualist of considerable character and lofty personal standards. As a young man freshly emerged from the school of Carolus-Duran in Paris, critics said he had nothing more to learn. Indeed, it seems he could plop himself down pretty well anywhere and turn out a creditable work. As all good retrospectives do, this one at the Corcoran gives us a few off-the-cuff losers as well as a feast of winners. Perhaps a private conceit, Sargent's goal was always to make work look effortless, and in those odd times when he didn't quite make it, there's a little flash of hope for mortals like us.”

Have you ever been to the Queen Califia garden at Kit Carson park in Escondido? It is magical! The design and artwork is by Niki de Saint Phalle. I really recommend a stop for all. Great for family as well as artists.

Taking apart an iron

I don't remember being that interested as a child in taking apart things. maybe it was because that was not a "girl" thing to do or maybe it just wasn't allowed to make such a mess. I was told to focus on my piano lessons instead. Certainly for me, playing the piano was never as much fun as taking apart an iron.

The shape of a vintage iron is also the shape of a shrine in the making. I had an old iron in the studio just waiting to be disassembled. So...I "dug" into it. Literally with my screwdriver and some force! What a treasure I discovered!

It always amazes me to discover how things before this century were built. There is no plastic. All is metal and full of levers, and screws that someone had to put together on an assembly line. There were not robots. Someone sat and repetively put the parts in a new iron, over and over and over again. I doubt if this sort of assembly will ever be again.

I like Golden fluids the best. Useful colors are Carbon Black, Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold, Quinacridone Crimson, Pthalo Green, Paynes Grey, Micaceous Iron Oxide, silver, copper, gold or bronze, Dioxazine Purple, Pthalo Blue, and various interference colors.

Rules:

Is there a hole? People look into it. Put something there.
Look and balance on all sides. If something is ugly, fix it.
Keep an interest by building at various levels. Not all flat.
Make visual “bridges” to unite the art and to keep the viewer’s eye moving.
When applying white acrylic, make sure all is dry before the next step. Also, the water and all brushes need to be cleaned or your next color will be effected.

The term “assemblage” was coined by Jean Dubuffet (1950‘s) after he made a three dimensional collage of butterfly wings called “assemblages d’empreintes.” However years earlier, Marcel Duchamp (considered the originator, 1913 - 1921) and Pablo Picasso were making art using found objects as rebel artists.

Assemblage Art is related to Found Art. The term “Found Art” describes art created from the undisguised, but often modified, use of objects that are not normally considered art, often because they already have a mundane, utilitarian function. However, Assemblage is distinguished by the fact that the art arises from the placement of multiple objects, which might be more highly modified, in a way that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. The idea of dignifying commonplace objects was originally a shocking challenge to the accepted distinction between what was considered art as opposed to not art.

In 1961 the New York Museum of Modern Art exhibited “The Art of Assemblage” (curated by William C. Seitz) with works by Braque, Joseph Cornell, Dubuffet, Duchamp, Picasso, Rauchenberg, Man Ray and Kurt Schwitters.
